This presentation will reinforce concepts to achieve safe and successful completion of longer duration procedures in the dental office as they relate to patient screening and selection; indications for sedation; depth / duration of anesthesia limit setting; training and experience of the dental clinician and coordination of responsibilities when third party anesthesia providers become involved.

Upon completion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
1) define and contrast moderate sedation, deep sedation and general anesthesia;
2) identify relative contraindications to general anesthesia with intubation in out-patient settings;
3) explain LAST (local anesthetic systemic toxicity) – prevention, diagnosis and management; and
4) list six serious medical complications that increase in frequency when patients are exposed to longer than three hours of continuous anesthesia or sedation.
Robert Bosack, DDS is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon with over 40 years of clinical experience. In addition to a full scope private practice, Bosack maintains a teaching appointment at the University of Illinois.
He is co-editor of Anesthesia Complications in the Dental Office, which has become the standard reference textbook for dental office-based sedation. Dr. Bosack is the founding chairman of the Dental Patient Safety Foundation, the first federally recognized Patient Safety Organization (PSO) devoted exclusively to the dental profession and is Executive Director of Dental Anesthesia Online, a web-based, up-to-date educational resource for anesthesia and sedation in the dental office.
He is the 2023 recipient of the Heidbrink Award – the highest honor of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology.
